Huchler Scheune: Living Experience Alongside the Historic City Wall

Medieval city walls are tourist magnets in many places – but they aren't usually associated with residential living. This makes the "Huchler Scheune" renovation project, implemented by COAST Architects in Waiblingen, all the more extraordinary: A barn in danger of collapsing, with the historic city wall as one of its exterior walls, was transformed into a unique residential and office building. In addition to heritage and fire protection, the goal was to combine modern building services, architecture, and design with the existing building.

Nach Stabilisierung konnten große Teile der originalen Balken und der weiteren Bausubstanz der Huchler Scheune bewahrt werden.

The vision: To create a spacious living experience in the 300-year-old, disused building while simultaneously restoring the historic spatial structure all around. The historic city wall forms the northern exterior wall, which can also be experienced in its original state throughout the building's floors.

After stabilization, large sections of the original beams and other structural elements could be preserved. Combined with many modern, high-quality design elements and generous windows, this creates a unique, personal living style in an open floor plan – including a bathroom with a clear view of the sky. The TECEnow toilet flush plate, with its clean look and scratch-resistant surface, fits perfectly into the new living environment.
